VHS tracking goes crazy when recording to DVD.?

I have a lot (200) of VHS tapes of educational material some comercial, some recorded from TV. I want to write them to DVD to save space (I can get three tapes on a dvd). When I connect my VHS player and DVD recorder via the scart lead the tracking of a lot of the tapes goes off (scrolling, and 'noise' on screen). Some of course are 'copy protected' and I expect that, but dont understand why the picture goes crazy (and records crazy) when I switch the DVD recorder on.

Sounds like a incorrectly wired Scart cable to me. Try a different one.
