Very fast stop action flash photography. Any circuit design clues or suggestions?

I love this type of photography. I have had limited success using a Vivitar 283. The flash pulse is simply to long. I can't get it to less than 1/50,000 second. I have looked at commercial microsecond stop action flash units but they run into the thousands of dollars.

I am trying to design a microsecond flash unit of my own but I can't figure out how to deliver a fast, powerful pulse to the xenon tube. I am using a FT-R90 800 w/s circular flash tube and quality capacitors. Is this tube even capable of microsecond flashes? Any ideas?
