Vertex paint in blender?

OK, I'm new to blender. I'm trying to paint a mesh. I go to the materials panel and make sure that VCol Paint is on. then I switch to the edit panel and go to vertex paint. I choose my color and everything in the paint section of the edit panel, and try to paint. It doesn't work. No matter what I do, my color doesn't show up! Please help.
