Verizon Wireless Service Issue?

My contract with Verizon Wireless was up on July 31st and that's the day I called and cancelled my account. That same day I had 2 of my 3 phone numbers switched over to another company. The third phone number I no longer needed or wanted. Then I donated the phones.

Later when I checked my credit card they had charged my card $170 when my last bill was suppose to be $85. I called Verizon trying to clear up the situation but the woman on the phone kept telling me that my contract wasn't up until October but that wasn't the issue. The issue was that on the third phone line I had supposedly downloaded $65 worth of apps on July 25th. I knew this couldn't be possible at all and the woman that I talked to didn't want to work with me. So I disputed the charge on my credit card.

I decided to call today to resolve the issue because I wanted to pay the $85 that I knew that I owed. When I called the woman I spoke with told me that my contract was up on July 31st and that the downloads accrued on August 1st, August 4th and another later date. I told her that I cancelled my account on July 31st. She told me that when I called all it did was suspend my account and my account was suppose to cancel on the end of the billing cycle on August 8th. and that I was responsible for all those charges on the phone. I explained that I called to cancel and if it was suspended so why was anyone allowed to download anything on that phone with my account. She couldn't answer that.

I told her that I was willing to pay the $85 that I did owe as long as they dropped the charges that I didn't feel I was responsible for. They said because my credit card hadn't notified Verizon that the charges had be disputed yet my account balance was currently $0 and that when my credit card did notify Verizon they would turn me over to a debt collection agency. I feel that if they turn me over to a debt collection agency when I'm willing to pay what I truly feel I owe that I shouldn't even work with them after that. Why should I take a hit on my credit and still have to pay $85 or more?

What are my options? I honestly don't feel like I'm responsible for all those downloads when I canceled my account (according to them suspended it until the end of the billing cycle) and donated my phone. What can I do to prevent them from hurting my credit?

I've already filed a claim with the BBB but I haven't received any response and I'm afraid I won't. They probably get claims against Verizon hourly.
