Verizon Wireless compatibility with foreign phones?

I dont think this will work. Since most phones internationally use the GSM standard Verizon uses CDMA. GSM phones are easy to switchover to other companies if they are unlocked however like verizon phones CDMA will only work on its sole company. GSM is not compatible with verizon.
 
I wanted to buy a cellphone other than the ones on the verizon wireless website. I was wondering of the compatibility/coverage issues that might be present. If I were to buy a phone from China/Japan and have a lot of capabilities, would it be possible to use verizon wireless??
