Verizon Pre smartphones vs. Samsung multimedia phones?

I'm in the market for a new Verizon phone. The main idiosyncratic features I care about are instantaneous email alerts and customizable shortcuts (i.e. making the alarm clock easily accessilbe without digging through menus, etc.). I would like to be able to download apps, but it's not vital as long as I can change the display, sounds, etc. So I'm thinking about the Palm Pixi Plus or Palm Pre Plus versus the Samsung Reality or Samsung Rogue. What should I get?

Cons of the Samsung phones: I'm not sure if I can get *instantaneous* email alerts via Mobile Email, or whether I have to log in to the program to check for new mail. I'd like to be able to just forget about email until one pops up. I love the way the Reality and Rogue are set up. I really don't need to be editing documents or doing a lot of work on my phone.

Cons of the Palm phones: I'm new to smartphones and to Palms. They look like they take some a lot of getting used to. I used both at the store, and I was bumping the wrong things on the touch screen and opening things by accident. I wasn't able to easily find a way to change the settings (ringtones, display, fonts, etc.). It also took a lot of digging to find the alarm clock application. I'd like to be able to customize shortcuts - I'll use the clock feature more often than the calendar feature, for example, so I'd like that to be in the toolbar on the main screen.

I'm also thinking about some of the Verizon Droid phones, but I like a real (not virtual) keyboard, and I wouldn't like to pay a ton, so I think I've crossed those off my list for now.
