Verizon final bill / Debt collection letter - what to do?

Here's my situation:

1) Canceled my Verizon land line (in MA) in July due to relocation to CA.
2) Paid off all outstanding bills with them (or so I thought..)
3) 3 months after moving, Verizon sends bill for $34.16 to my CA address
4) Bill had no explanation - so I called to verify/clarify
5) Verizon said they made a mistake and undercharged some customers in May
6) I verified this and sent a check to them some time over the next 3 weeks
7) Check was processed by Verizon - as per my bank statement
8) Received letter from ERSolutions (collection agency) a few days ago about my 'debt' to Verizon, demanding payment for $34.16.

What should I do at this point? Verizon cashed my check, and yet referred me to a debt collector for a 'late' payment caused by their own mistake. Is my credit already damaged? Also, I don't think I should be paying this $34.16 a second time!
