Verizon, Dial up networking, XV6700, are there no easy solutions?

I need some help. What I'm trying to do seems like it should be simple but it appears that the cell carriers aren't interested in making it easy, so I'm turning to howardforums.

I've been a Verizon customer for years now, and I've always been able to dial in to their #777 network, using my phone as a modem for my laptop/pda. Using this solution, I can do email and light web surfing while using up only my voice minutes.

Now it's time for a updated phone. Ideally, I could just use bluetooth instead of a usb/serial cable to connect my pda/laptop, but the Verizon people (not surprisingly) want to have me buy their $45/mo data plan rather than use the #777 solution. I'm not willing to do that, but I'm sure that there must be a way to get a newer bluetooth phone and do what I'm trying to do here, even if I have to change carriers. Does Sprint, T-Mobile, or Cingular allow the same kind of setup?

For Verizon I've been thinking about getting the v710 (analog and bluetooth), the e815 (bluetooth), or the xv6700 (pda, bluetooth, and maybe the ability to connect the pda part to the internet without using a dataplan?). I currently have a LG vx6100.

Is anybody out there doing what I'm trying to do here, and if so what phone are you using? (I don't mind flashing firmware and such, but would appreciate links).

I suspect there is an easier way. Keep your current service plan and go find a CDMA 1X EV-DO capable phone off HoFO or the internet. Make sure it is a model Verizon carries. Once you get it, call up Verizon and get it activated for your account (you will deactivate the old phone in the process). Once you've done that you should be good to go. I will warn you, their data transfer rates over EV-DO is much faster than through a voice call.
