Verizon data plan? Could I cancel it after one month?

I am going to get a new phone soon, but all of the phones require an additional monthy data plan now. For example, the plan for the smartphones is $29.99 per month, and I do not want or need that. Would I be able to pay for the data plan for the first month, then cancel it and still be able to use the phone for calls and texts, etc.? Thanks!
 
Data plans are required on smart phones. You cant remove them. They are required and start as low as $10 a month. If you can't afford it, don't buy a smartphone.
