verizon contract.. smartphone question?

so im pretty sick of my lg versa.. and my friend is selling is droid x
can i go to a store and activate the droid? or i cant cuz its a smartphone? and i have to add internet and everything? thanksi dont mind paying for internet
my question is if i can change it to a smartphone during my contract..
