Verizon cell service: worse than Alltel?

I was an Alltel customer for years, then Alltel was gobbled up by Verizon. I recently switched from my Alltel service plan to a Verizon plan and got a new Verizon phone (LG-VX11000 EnV Touch). I have noticed that the level of signal reception of the new phone is significantly less than with my old Alltel phone. I did the *228 to update my roaming info, but that did not help with signal reception. Anyone else have this issue? Solutions?
 
In general, Verizon is considered to have the best reception of all the cell phone services in the USA. However, depending on your specific location, a different service may have a stronger signal. You also need to consider whether the problem could be with your phone itself; some phones are just better at picking up marginal signals - so find someone else who has Verizon, but a different model of phone, and see if their phone works better in the same locations. If so, then see if you can swap your phone for a better one.
