Verizon and AT&T were the top performers in a new report about four Phoenix-area cell phone carriers with the strongest data, call, text and combined performance.
RootMetrics, a Seattle-based independent mobile analytics organization, gave RootScore Awards to the four carriers after conducting more than 48,000 data, call and text tests in October on the Phoenix networks of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.
“To mirror a typical consumer’s mobile experience, we measured performance indoors and outdoors, across all hours of the day and night, with tests designed to replicate how people use their smartphones most frequently,” according to RootMetrics.
The results:
AT&T and Verizon tied in the combined RootScore performance award, which means they have good overall coverage and a good consumer experience. AT&T received 96.1 and Verizon got 95.6, out of a possible 100.
Verizon ranked highest in network reliability, receiving 98.5, with AT&T followed closely behind at 97.3, out of a possible 100.
T-Mobile ranked highest in network speed, with a score of 95.3, followed by AT&T with 90.8.
RootMetrics compared these results with the previous visit in June. Verizon won the combined RootScore performance award outright in June.
All carriers had download and upload speeds comparable to the speeds found in June, according to RootMetrics.
AT&T has invested nearly $80 million in its Arizona networks in the first half of 2013, and launched its 4G LTE faster service in Phoenix in January 2012.
Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE network in metro Phoenix in December 2010 and continues to expand across the state and country.
