Recently, I have noticed my computer running rather sluggishly. I ran a full computer scan using ESET NOD32 and it came up with various viruses. Six out of seven were deleted(sent to quarantine?). The one that was not deleted had svchost.exe as part of its file name. After some Googleing, I found out that there a virus that uses/effects specifically the svchost.exe which is used by Windows. (Or at least, that's my understanding.)
From a site that seemed to know what it was talking about, it recommended that I run a virus scan in safe mode. I did this and I couldn't quite make out what it was doing. It just gave me a bunch of information in a window that looked like the command prompt. I don't know if the virus was deleted or not.
So, naturally I ran another full computer scan, but this one turned up clean. Good, right? Not so much. Opening the Task Manager I still see various svchost.exe files running. I believe that this is normal, but not the fact that one of them is using around 160,000 K of memory, with all of them totaled up for over 200,000 K. With just Google Chrome and ESET open running I'm using around 40% of my physical memory. I have a feeling the computer that I'm on should not be using that amount for just two semi-light weight programs.
In addition, I had to re-enable the use of my task manager, which apparently is a red flag of a virus.
So, I guess my question is, do I still have the svchost.exe virus? How can I tell? I can post any additional information if needed.
