I have Money due me from the "Pennsylvania Treasury of Unclaimed Property". They have a hold on my checks because they're requesting from me "proof" that I lived at a certain residence and had a PO Box as a mailing address. This was over 35 years ago and I have spent the past several hours searching for some kind of correspondence with the PO Box number on it, but to no avail. I have moved at least 12 times (to different States) in my career and really had no need to hold on to any of that correspondence. I called the Post Office USPS and their reply was that they don't hold on to records for that length of time. They couldn't give me any suggestions where to look except if I had Income Tax files - NOT FOR 30 YEARS! I provided my Date of Birth and Social Security Number and my last name is extremely uncommon. These are Mobil certificates and its not a lot of money but being retired and recovering from triple by-pass surgery a year ago the little bit will help. I called the PA Treasury back today and explained this again (I had called yesterday) and their response was that they couldn't help me or provide suggestions on where to search. They have been sitting on the money for 30+years without providing interest on the money. I asked what happens to it after I die? Their response was that they would hold on to it until someone can claim it! If I can't find proof of residence, how is my wife going to? We weren't even married at that time.
Does anyone know how I get get my proof of owning a Post Office Box and verify my address? I would also like to file a complaint to the State Treasurer of Pennsylvania and attempt to rationalize how absurd this requirement is !
Thanks,
John
