I am a 37 y/o male who is generally in good health. In the past 6 months I have experienced the following: unintentional weight loss from 168 to 135#; loss of appetite, severe/recurring lower left abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits (diarrhea to pencil like stools), swollen right eyelids, puffy eyes, throbbing vein in left temple, and on again off again fever of 101.5. I have been to my PCP; he prescribed Cipro for an infection in my intestine (2 cycles) and said I may be suffering for malabsorption. I have not had any reflief and any direction/advice would be appreciated.

Have you been tested for celiac's disease? My mom has it and she had several of your symptoms. Your doctor can do a general blood test which should give you a good idea but alot of doctor's arent up on the latest info so check around for one that is quite familiar with it. Only a biopsy of your intestinal tissue can confirm the diagnois, one day procedure, they go through your throat and pluck out some tissue from your intestine to test it. Doesnt hurt, not a big deal. Good luck.

I think it is time to request a referral to a gastrointestial doctor. This doctor can run some lab work and possibly an endoscope (just had one done on Monday) and a colonoscopy (not the most pleasant prep before the test, but easy test to have perfomed). Make sure it is a colonoscopy and not a sigmoidoscopy, the difference in the test is one looks at the whole colon and the other only looks at the sigmoid section of the colon. Colonoscopy they give you medication so that you sleep though the procedure and sigmoidoscopy they do not. (not a pleasant feeling) You have to do the same prep for both types, so you might as well have the whole colon checked out.

I hope you feel better soon.
