valves tapping? Ford 4.0 ranger?

i have recently changed the head gasket in my truck and i started it up and the valves are tapping so loud and i do not know why its doin it. its not low on oil at all. do they need adjusted? how do i do that?
how can i put them on wrong?are they not inside the spring when i take off the head?
