PC GamesValve's Gabe Newell was the keynote speaker at LinuxCon yesterday. During the speech, he expressed that Valve's vision is that Linux is the future of gaming.
Specifically, Mr. Newell was expressing that each time a proprietary, closed system went up against an open system, the open system won. There were several not-too-subtle riffs on the way that Microsoft is trying to transform the PC marketplace into a marketplace controlled by Microsoft, in a similar way to Apple with their iTunes store.
In the quest for an open alternative, Valve has not found Linux development easy, by any stretch of the imagination - at some points in the process, several consumer and even developer unfriendly elements were uncovered. Valve's response to this has been to expand and invest in the Linux toolset.
Mr. Newell eluded to either elements of the Steam Box or perhaps even versions of the Steam Box itself would be forthcoming soon - stay tuned for more information on that.
Although this video of his keynote is less than ideal (video quality), Gabe Newell's entire presentation is available below for your viewing enjoyment.
