Valve Adjustment - Uh-oh...

First, I'd like to say, Hello! This is a great informative forum and whomever put it together, kudos!!! I have a quick question for anyone who can help:
My husband wanted to perform a valve adjustment on his C50. I found this forum and came across therusks.com which had a valve adjustment procedure complete with pics and all (which is awesome, btw) and once he was finished, the bike is now making loud ticking/pinging noises. A mechanic in the family told him something is "loose". Any idea what could've gone wrong?

Well, definitely don't run it anymore. My two guesses are incorrect camshaft position during measurement, and improper use of the feeler gauges or improper retightening of the valve adjuster. Regardless, it needs to be done again. Someone with some mechanical experience should take a look for valvetrain damage, too.
 
I appreciate the response. I'll be sure to let him know. He was really disappointed when it happened, as he thought he did everything right. He also did say something about his feeler gauge possibly being "off". His cousin is a car mechanic and has been for over 10 years who will 'supervise' when he attempts this again.
