Vacation destinations with many natural attractions likes hikes, rivers, lakes?

I am usually the one who plans all of our family vacations. We recently went to the olympic peninsula in washington state where we rented a house for a week. it was absolutely gorgeous, and there were amazing lakes, rivers, beaches, and natural wonders in the area that we visited. i want to plan a similar vacation, because that one was such a success but don't have any idea where to go. any ideas?

The UP of Michigan
Mostly all of the western states have good scenery
or The Great Smoky Mountains

White mountain area (White Mountain National Forest) of New Hampshire is similar in that there are many stream, rivers, mountain lakes, and mountain peaks.

I second New Hampshire. Absolutely gorgeous, especially late September when the leaves are changing color. But, it's awesome year round.
