Using the BlackBerry Curve without the Data Plan.

No, no, NO! Verizon does NOT require you to have a data plan with "any" smartphone!!
My son, a college student, has a Palm Centro smartphone, and we do not have a data plan. We only have a family share plan. No one EVER even mentioned a data plan to us.
By the way, Blackberry gets all the attention and is perceived as glamorous, but it's an UGLY, bulky phone. My son's Centro is absolutely fantastic and does everything you'd want as an organizer (in addition to phone/text functions of course) but is much sleeker. I'll bet it has MORE functions than a blackberry.
I strongly encourage anyone who wants a smartphone, without the expensive data plan, to check out the Centro.

VZW is the one carrier that requires a data plan on smartphones/Blackberry devices. With other carriers they will suggest them and try to push them on you (the reps make commission from them), but they are not required. With a Blackberry, in particular, you need the data plan if you wish to use the Blackberry features, but otherwise it is not required by other carriers (other than VZW, that is). I have had AT&T for seven years; T-Mobile for seven years (since they were Omnipoint); Sprint for seven years, and VZW for nine years (since they were Bell Atlantic Mobile). Trust me on this.

T-Mobile Does NOT require you to have a data plan neither, I have T-Mobile and i recently just got rid of a blackberry that i did not like and i never got the data plan with it, the only thing i couldnt do was update my 5 Faves, I had to call them and they had to send me the update in a text.

I was shopping cell phones and plans at Walmart's website during December 2008. Several Blackberries were being offered with out data plans only with AT&T. I believe the vendor was "Let's talk " . I remained with Alltel, hoping for the new 9630 !

It alll boils down to date phone was purchased......if you bought your smart phone or PDA after 11/28/2008 you will be required to subscribe to an extra cost data package. VZW also adds a mandatory package to newer "full feature cell phones" starting at $9.95/mo. (have two LG touch phones on family plan and newer one requires extra cost package. )
