Using the BlackBerry Curve without the Data Plan.

I'm looking to use the BlackBerry Curve as just a regular cell phone. I like the style and look of the phone, but I have no purpose to use the internet on it.

I have heard by many people that I can just get the phone and then a few days later call Verizon and have them block the data plan? I'm really confused about the whole process. Can someone clear this up? Does it really work?

I just want the BlackBerry Curve as a REGULAR cell phone and if I block the data plan and call verizon will it then function as a normal phone?

Data plan has been required on every Blackberry ever made with any carrier since the dawn of time...

It is required...and you cannot bypass the mandated Blackberry data plan.

This is wrong information. I have a Curve, and an AT&T family plan. I DON"T have a Blackberry plan. When I want to send pictures or check for maps online when traveling, I call 611 and they turn it on. When I am don'e, I call them back and they disconnect it again. So like right now, I have just a cellphone. Maybe other carriers are different, but I doubt it.

I know Blackberry mandates the data plan.

I remember trying to buy a Blackberry from AT&T a few years back, data plan required--lost sale.

Did you unlock your device? Where did you get it...directly from AT&T?

I am positive about my information.

Maybe for another carrier but not for AT&T. And maybe a few years back.

Not unlocked and directly from AT&T.

I am positive about my information, because I had them turn it on for me 2 weeks ago, and I called about a week ago and had it turned off again.

I am not going to argue with you, believe what you want, but I have the phone, and no internet access.

VERIZON absolutely requires a data plan for Blackberry. I activated one yesterday online and had to choose between the corporate rate @ 44.99 (?) or the personal rate at 29.99 before it would let me complete the transaction. T mobile, SPrint and AT&T maybe VERIZON ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!

I called my AT&T regional executive and they told me this:

It depends on the type of Blackberry, the price of the Blackberry, and how you/where you purchase the Blackberry. Stores, over the phone, and online all have different expectations.

You will have to have the Data plan in order to get any rebates back. If they notice that you remove the data plan after receiving a rebate, they reserve the right to 1) terminate your service, 2) add the data plan back on without your consent, or 3) charge you (to your bill) the price of the rebate they sent you.

Some devices (never stated which ones) will require the data plan no matter what.

BUT: This thread is about the Verizon Wireless Blackberry Curve. Your answer would be yes, the Verizon Wireless network says that all PDA/Smartphones/Blackberrys have to have a data plan.

I can personally attest to the fact other carriers do not mandate the BlackBerry plan. I currently have both ATT and Tmobile and neither require it. You can buy the phones free and clear or purchase one on ebay it doesn't have to be unlocked or out of contract or any other special feature. You can add it one month and take it off with no commitment. I moved to a new area where unfortunately Verizon was the top player and much to my surprise the plan is mandatory. That is a complete rip off. Then again Verizon over charges customers for everything. My father has them and they are ridiculous. In some area's though they are stuck with Verizon with limited options. I feel really bad for all the customers who had Alltel that are now part of Verizon.

Also...here's a little known industry fact...when Verizon was making claims they were had the largest network and had the most towers that claim was false. It is true they had a large network that was comprised of roaming contracts, but tower wise Alltel (yes Alltel) was the leader. They primarily had service in the southern states, but the company was smart and making enormous profits off Verizon for lending them roaming contracts on their towers. For example...those of you out west maybe heard of Western Wireless towers...yeah Alltel owned all those.

I point that all out b/c I hate companies that lie and over charge customers. There is no reason if you buy a blackberry at full price or somewhere else that you are obligated to get the data plan. **** Verizon.

My friend has AT&T and no data plan is "mandated" for his phone. I have Verizon, and know for a fact they make it mandatory to have a data plan for smartphones.
Some people just like to think they know everything. :p
