Using profanity in writing?

What are your thoughts on it. Some people say it makes a book look trashy and immature.I think well placed profanity adds some life to the novel and can make the reader relate to the characters.Because, who hasn't cursed when they hit their nail with a hammer or when they got cut off by someone on the road?
