Using iPhone with non-data SIM?

My brother got a new phone and gave me his iPhone 3GS. He has data on his plan, I do not. I popped in my SIM card and the phone seems to work fine. I do not have data on my plan and assume it cant be this easy to get by the required data plan on the iPhone. Surely they will charge me insane amount for any data used.

My question is, if I only surf online using Wi-Fi (maybe even disable 3G on the phone to make sure), will I still be charged for data if I use the phone only for phone calls over EDGE/3G? Will ATT see that my SIM card is being used with an iPhone and start charging me for the data plan anyways, or will I just be able to use the phone and be charged on a MB/s used system? Thanks!

It may take a month or so for AT&T to catch that you are using an iPhone and charge you for the data plan, until then they will charge you per MB. I would call AT&T to have them set it up right to be on the safe side.
