Using grammar errors on purpose when writing a book?

You know, when you use sentence fragments. I've seen it done, but is that technically right? Or does it not matter. I'd like to use a few, but I know that sometimes they just make the story confusing.

Also, I haven't seen it done much, but I'd like to use parenthesis a few times, and I have a weird feeling it's frowned upon while writing novels, but I can't resist them, it makes what I'm trying to say much clearer in very long sentences (which I can't break up, unfortunately.)

If it matters, I'm writing a fictional novel, half set in the 19th century and half in the present, there are many flashbacks, and a very long, possibly confusing list of characters.

I've been trying to write for myself, but can't help but fantasize about getting it published, and I would like to clear these questions I have even though I'll probably keep writing my way knowing that I'm wrong, but of course without the bothersome doubt about if I am doing it wrong or... right. Whichever may it be.
