Using a pay monthly sim in a pay as you go handset?

Recently i smashed the screen on my handset. I am on contract (pay monthly) and so I was planning on buying a new handset on pay as you go and using my pay monthly sim in it.
Would it work? Or are they programed to be just to pay as you go sims or something?
