Using 10w-40 oil on a 01 toyota corolla?

I have a 2001 toyota corolla with 150,000 miles in the car. I have a next door neighboor who happens to be a toyota mechanic and told me to use 10w-40 oil instead of 5w-30. Is this true? Should I use 10w-40 instead of 5w-30
