USERPROFILE registry key won't save correctly after .NET install.?

My friend wanted to install TI Connect to get data onto her calculator from Windows Vista. Unfortunately, TI Connect required a newer version of the .NET framework than she had on her computer, so she installed the newest version.

The next time she logged on, her profile loaded to default (appearance settings, files, etc. were not loaded). I took a look at it, and it turns out that her USERPROFILE environment variable (the one that holds the location of your home folder under C:\Users\), had been wiped, and Vista had instead loaded a temporary home folder. Her home folder still exists, and all of her files are intact, but there is no USERPROFILE environment variable to point to that folder when she logs in.

I have tried several different ways to reset USERPROFILE to the correct folder: setx, regedit, regedt32, and the usual way through the Control Panel>System>Advanced Settings>Environment Variables. None of them stick. When she logs off, it just wipes it all.

Does anyone have any idea of how to fix the registry so it'll start accepting changes again so I can save the correct USERPROFILE?
