Use cotton t-shirt as canvas for acrylic?

Hi I am wondering if it is possible to use a cotton t-shirt or other fabric from a piece of clothing and stretch it on the frame of a canvas. Will this type of fabric work well with acrylic paints? I am a beginning artist and I don't have the money to buy fabric from an art store to use when stretching so would the other fabrics work just as well? Thank you
 
t shirt material won't work well because it is knit and knit stretches. a woven material, like the back of a shirt with buttons would be better, but an even better choice would be heavy paper or wood.

i've seen it done many times and as long as the fabric isn't fleixble and it won't move around when you're trying to paint on it (if you stretch it, i'm sure it will do fne) it will work good.

Everything not too stretchy, not too porous and with a layer of Gesso/Glue will do.
The fabric alone will soak the colors and if it is not dense enough it will also let the acrylics penetrate the pores of the fabric and can create bubbles when drying. (Happened to me before...) Also T-Shirt will be too stretchy and a pain on a frame.
But stronger materials like old bed sheets is perfect if you ground it with gesso (Used on top of the fabric to seal it and make a smooth surface). You can also first apply a layer of glue (get one you can make thin enough with water) and then a layer of Gesso. And then, paint!
