Use Blackberry storm with a different SIM card?

Can I buy a Blackberry Storm 2 from Verizon wireless, unlock it and use it overseas. Basically, I don't want to pay the roaming charges when I travel and I want to put in a local sim instead. Is that possible? Since the Storm 2 uses CDMA, GSM and UMTS networks? Has anyone tried this? I know most verizon phones don't use SIM cards.
