Use a Sidekick 2008 for AT&T?

Hi, I just bought a sidekick 2008 from my friend because he just got a new blackberry today. If i want to use the phone with text messaging and calling with AT&T, do I need to go to AT&T to release her number from the phone? Or do i just have to unlock it and put my SIM card in? And can i just got watch the youtube videos on how to unlock the sidekick?
