US Immigration for sport... how can Cuban baseballers and Aussie NFL players stay?

I am an Aussie and love the fact that we have a couple of punters in the NFL... the Cards' Ben Graham and the Cowboys' Mat McBriar. But how can international players stay in the US. Is it a special visa? Do they have to have a contract before they are allowed to stay or shop their contract? Cheers for your help.
