in the 1930's it was total hell. we weren't just a couple points under but 200 points under. F. D. Roosevelt had created plans to relieve strews on the people by creating jobs. crappy jobs but still jobs. it wasn't till WWII till we regained in the economic status.
 
The stock market crashed and the US was in a major (The Great) Depression. Our entry into WWII put the economy back on track because it gave so many people jobs (not just soldiers - we had to make things, etc.).

So by 1945, we were out of the depression and back to prosperous.
