Essay question:

Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

Any ideas?

Mostly because communication and travel were so difficult back then. The two areas would go for long periods with very little contact with each other. This allowed small differences - local fads, local tastes, influential local leaders - to leave their mark on one or the other. Over time these minor differences would add up, eventually leading to (as you say) distinct societies.
