Upgrading to an iPhone?

Recently, I have purchased the Simplicity Sim Free Contract on O2, and put the Sim Card into my Nokia N96. However, I would really like to upgrade to an iPhone soon. I was wondering how it would be best to go about this, since I have just signed up for a new contract.

If I bought a Pay & Go iPhone, could my Simplicity Contract Sim Card go in it and work?

Or is there a better way?
