I am wondering if there is a way to upgrade from a SD 3100 receiver to a HD 9242 PVR through Bell and get the 50% offer that is now available. It says it is for new residential customers only, but you'd think they'd want to keep their current customers happy too. Is it possible to cancel the one service and get a new service the next day in my wife's name with a different phone number tied to the account? I think I could cancel one or two theme packs that we rarely watch and i'd only be paying an extra $4-5/month more for HD... aside from the 50% off $599 for the new 9242 HD-PVR.

Any suggestions? or could someone please clarify my options?

Thanks,

Yes, all you have to do is call in and close your account, if they ask why tell them you going with Rogers for HD and yourgetting a Rogers(or Shaw in Western Canada I guess) HD PVR, they will start making you offers (don't take the first offer), you should be able to get a 9242 free rental for a year (or buy outright for half price) 6 months free HD a a certain % off your bill depending on who big your bill is.

My dad did exactly what you're trying to do a couple of weeks ago.
He called to upgrade, and when they said it would be $599 and that the $299 deal was only for new customers, he asked to speak to the "customer loyalty department" (his words... maybe that's the retention department). I'm not sure if he threatened to cancel or switch, but they ended up giving him the $299 deal.
