Upgrade from macbook @ apple store?

so say something went wrong with my mabook computer and i took it to the apple store... and they say that they will replace it for a new one because its defective... can i say i want to upgrade and just pay them the difference even if my macbook is 3 months old?
upgrade as in upgrade from the macbook to the macbook pro 13 inch
