Troy, My lamenectomy and diskectomy was May 5th, 2005. L5-S1 herniated disk. This stems from an auto accident two years prior and exacerbated by a work injury a year or so after that. Long time to have a sciatic nerve impeded. I was fine after the suregery. Two months later I started having problems, I am one of the 10% that it doesn't go well with. Scar tissue has developed and all the pain is back with the same intensity of presurgery. If you have any issues see a specialist, do not completly rely on your surgeon, what they do best is surgery. Go easy on your back and do what they say. I would suggest a follow up MRI (not Xray) with contrast after a few months, this way any issues could be handle swiftly. I am going back to pain management which will be permanent for a very long time unless they come up with some genetic stem cell means of changing how you scar after surgery.

Troy, I'm glad that you are making out as good as you are. I am 1 week post-op today. I had a double Laminectomy on L4-S1. The also repaired the herniation at both levels. I am having the pain from the procedure plus new pain down my left leg. I am in more pain now then before hopefully a couple more days of rest will help.
All the Best,
Tugs, (Jim)

Having this done Dec.12th, 48 yr. old male. Have 2 ruptured disc,L4 & L5,, had them approx 10 years,,M R I" s done last week and in 2000. have tried all remidies, PT, ect.left foot and leg very nurab,,taking hydrocodone 5/500..have to take 8 per day to tolorate leg-back pain.thought i would never choose surgery, but first time I have missed work due to back--anyone have experiences with this operation? recovery time,, how to you feel and are able to get around after surgery,,was it worth it,,ect ? all replies appreciated,,this is an interesting board but rarely see any positive post about back operations.... also, will I be able to resume my normal lifestyle, i work physical and drive dirt track cars ,,Thank You

Hi Troy. I imagine you would be having a discectomy as well to remove the part of the disc that is ruptured? I am one week post op for microdiscectomy and medial facetecomy. That is removal of part of the facet joint. I had severe pain in right buttock, right calf and nurab toes. One week on and I am pain free, have weak right foot, but can walk OK. Surgeon says this will recover over time. Best of it is so far I am pain free. Your laminectomy is the removal of the lamina of the vertebra. wonder if they will remove ruptured part of the disc as well? Jean

Troy - I was walking the day after surgery, and went home that day. Just taking it very carefully and hope to return to work 2 weeks post op. Jean

Troy,

Just a quick note to let you know you're in my thoughts and prayers for your surgery. I wish you a quick recovery.

Take care and let us know how you do.

Hugs,

Troy,

I'll put my 2 cents in. I had a diskectomy in 1988. Woke up from surgery practically pain free. Just started having trouble again this year. Re-herniated and now another herniation. I'm schedule to have L4thru S1 fusion on 12/22. So your talking 16 to 17 years of success.

Hope it all works out well for you.

i had a wrong 3 level laminectomy 4 months ago and the pain i felt for about to weeks was bad but the most extreme pain is right after but the docs will have you on a med through your iv that will most likely be controlled by you. Even though it is set where you can only get so much in an hour it will take care of your pain and if it does not tell the nurse and they will make sure you are comfotable. i was very scarred to but it wasnt that bad but i continue to have severe back pain because of 2 torn disks , so ill be back in for a 3 level fusion im scared but if it gets rid of the everyday pain then its worth it.

TroyM32,
Hello my first back surgery was a lurabar laminectomy on L5-S1. I knew right when I woke up out of surgery that I was better. My left leg did not hurt anymore. I was up and moving the very next day. The best excersise is walk walk walk!!!!! That surgery lasted eight years and then I reherniated it. The best advice I can give you is DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID EVEN IF YOU FEEL LIKE A NEW MAN!!!! Those disks will be very weak for a while so take it easy and do everything your doc tells you to do. I hope everything turns out fine.
I hope you have a blessed day!!!

I had the surgery at 1:00pm Monday Dec. 12,,and was walking around at 9:30 that night, was told I had 1 severely ruptured disc and 1 moderate one. Came home the next afternoon, walked out of hospital,as sitting in a wheel chair would have been painful. Today is 3 days past the surgery,my foot is still pretty nurab, leg pain mostly gone,of course back area of incision very sore, taking 1 percocet every 5 hours. I learned a big plus is having a good surgeon, good nurses, and a physical therapists to come by and tell you how to move and how not to move, getting up, ect..i do walk around the house with a walker, probably on my feet half the day doing stuff,,feels better to walk around.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and concerns. But I definatley made then right choice for surgery.

I am now experiencing probably more foot nurabness and symptons related to ruptured disc than before the surgery,,e doctors say I will for a while. I can walk around fine, but concerned with the nurabness -tingling in the foot,,and a little in the leg,but it's only been 4 days since the lurabar laminectomy for 2 ruptured disc. good luck to everyone else.

Hi Troy, I am 2.5 weeks post Micro-D. I had the foot nurabness until a few days ago, now I have a little sciatic pain in the mornings, which goes away later. I think it's just the nerve trying to heal - make take months. Jean

Good for you Troy - I'm 2 weeks post op MicroD, and feeling better every day, although today, incision area is sore again for some reason and I have a few twinges. Good luck. Jean

I am at 3 weeks recovery after a laminectomy L3,4,5 and spinal fusion of 2 vertebrae. My sciatic pain is gone; I was in constant agony before the surgery. That pain is gone. I've heard various lengths of time for recovery. That's why I'm on this forum to hear some stories. I'm still on pain meRAB but much less than I was taking. I'm still "homebound" but think in another 2-3 weeks I'll be able to resume some of my activities.
