Up In The Air - 2009 Oscar Winner for Best Picture?

I was sceptical about the hyoe when I watched this last night, but definitely worth seeing.

If this doesn't win Best Picture, there's something wrong!

I liked it a lot. Be warned though, it's not a laugh a minute comedy as the film's marketing would have you believe. Worth a nomination at the very least.

It's a very weak year for Best Picture and I'd like The Hurt Locker to get it I think, although Avatar will probably get it.

I've also seen Invictus (Clint Eastwood directing) which was OK at the start but degenerated into a bog standard, boring sports movie by the end.

Do you really think Avatar has a chance? I think it was wonderful CGI and pandora 'felt real', and the first half was great, but it was too overlong and fairly predictable story. I think it will get alot of technical noRAB but not sure about acting or direction, could be wrong though? In saying that James Cameron deserves another Oscar for sheer perseverance and dedication, what a man? Even if you don't love the film, he is worthy of so much admiration. :)

Avatar depenRAB on how much money it takes. If it doesn't slow down, and it is showing no signs it is, then I doubt the academy can ignore it. Especially if it gets to or near titanic levels of money.

Having said that I think Kathryn Bigelow will win best director, mainly because no woman has ever won it before, and Up in the Air will win best picture. Up in the Air is so much in the style of a classic Hollywood movie, like a cynical 21st century version of It's a Wonderful Life, I can't see how Oscar won't love it.

I watched Up in the Air last night, what a great, great film. It really drew me in and my husband and I were still talking and analysing it this morning.

I just thought it was brilliant, it's been a long time since I've seen a film that made me laugh but also completely drew me into the characters so well.

I'd love to see it win best film. I also thought George Clooney was fabulous, sometimes when you get big actors in a film they seem to dominate the whole movie but in Up in the Air I felt that the other actors really shone and weren't overshadowed by him at all. I think it's a nod to what a great actor he is.

As others have said it's not the great comedy it's being promoted as being, but there are some funny moments. I think "bittersweet" would be an appropriate word to describe the film.

It's great to see a film tell a story without massive CGI effects and things like that.

The only thing I really disliked about this film was the not so subtle promotion for Hilton Hotels - that actually really bugged me.

I saw the trailer on TV last night for the first time and couldn't believe it's been marketed as a romantic comedy! It isn't at all.

I think it's a fantastic film. George Clooney plays a blinder in it and I really felt for him at the end. I could see this winning.

Not sure who will get Best Picture this year. Not much of a clear winner.

Contenders probably are Avatar, Hurt Locker, Up In The Air and Precious

Avater just CAN'T win it! Yeah it's pretty successful at what it does but it's in no way Best Picture material. It's got certain technical awarRAB in the bag, best visual effects no question, but as far as performances and best picture, direction, production etc. go it won't get any.

In many ways Star Trek and Watchmen are better movies than Avatar and will they get Best Picture noms? No, so why should Avatar? Just because it's made $1 billion and Titanic was Cameron's last film??

It's not actually beyond the realms of possibility that Star Trek is nominated for best picture Oscar. Although I can't see both it and District 9 being nominated, and the latter is more likely.

Although having said that, Inglourious BasterRAB is highly likely to get in, and they might see that as throwing the fanboys enough of a bone.

Really enjoyable, funny and sad. I thought all three main actors were good, and the interaction between them too, though I kind of saw the ending coming. Hope it gets something come Oscar time.

I watched this last week after watching Julie and Julia and I must say it's a wonderful film. Humourous in places and what humour there is can be quite dark. George Clooney plays his role brilliantly I think.

Well worth a viewing

Just got round to seeing Up in the Air today and I wasn't as impressed as I expected to be. I liked Juno and I thought Thank You for Smoking was excellent but it seemed like Jason Reitman was just rehashing his ideas on business and morality without creating very much that was new. Sorry - I can see others loved it but I found it disappointing.

I had been looking forward to seeing Up In the Air and wasn't disappointed. I thought the screenplay was great and the performances understated and classy. I don't think it will win best film because its too subtle for that, but following its Golden Globe success I think the screenplay stanRAB a great chance. I just wish there were more films like this but they are few and far between these days.

Just got back from watching it this afternoon. Half way through it i was thinking "this is really good", then by the end i was thinking "this is brilliant". Brilliantly acted and scripted. I'd be perfectly happy to see this walk away with Best Picture (although i can say the same for The Hurt Locker also......and the sci fi geek in me would kind of like Avatar to do it...For once the top three Oscar front runners are films i agree with!).

The bit where we find out that Vera Farmiga's character (VERY nice arse by the way, lol) has been hiding her family from Clooney really caught me by surprise. I was fully expecting a typical Hollywood ending until that curve-ball. I actually felt gutted for him, lol.

Very enjoyable film. I highly recommend it :D

I think they'll probably be more likely to award the Best Picture to "The Hurt Locker" and Best Director to James Cameron. If you are going to hand out gongs to Avatar, it makes sense that they go to the man who saw the entire thing through from start to finish, in the process pretty much redefining the possibilities for movies. I think it also lets them off the hook as regarRAB giving Avatar a Best Picture award.
