Unlocking phones yourself?

Okay, well I've heard that you can unlock a phone through a computer yourself.
Well I want a Straight talk plan and to unlock a better phone.
I know you can unlock phones yourself because i had a friend who has done it before. And I was wondering if you could direct me to a website where they tell me how to do it, or if you could tell me how to.
(If you don't want to post it on here you can send me an email because I don't know if its legal or not)
I would be using a Motorola Brute i680 (Sprint. Nextel), or a Casio G'Zone rock (Verizon)

It all depends on the phone. Not all makes and models of phones are unlocked the same way. What works for a SonyEricsson does not work for a Nokia etc, etc...

Get the phone first.

EDIT: Those two phones are CDMA phones. You don't unlock CDMA phones. GSM phones (ones that use a sim card) are unlocked. If you are trying to use a Verizon phone on the Sprint network or vice versa, the phones would have to be flashed if flashing is possible. Sometimes it's not.

BTW-unlocking or flashing is not illegal in any way.
