Unlocking iPhone 3GS?

I want to buy an upgrade on my husband's Orange Pay Monthly account, and then insert an Orange Pay as you Go SIM into the iPhone, and give my husband the Pay Monthly SIM. Is this possible, or do I need to unlock my iPhone first? If I DO need to unlock my iPhone, how can I do this for free?
