Unlocked Phones/Providers Question

Consider me a n00b about cell phones, but I have a need to ask.

I'm looking into getting a new cell phone, and I am interested in getting the Motorola RAZR Maxx, but as far as I know, no American providers offer it. So can I buy the phone unlocked? And if so, does anyone know what providers will support such a phone?

Since it is GSM Tri Band and EDGE compatible, and unlocked, you should be able to use it on either Cingular or T-Mobile. I don't know if you will be able to take advantage of the video and other features however. I think it will be released on Verizon here in the US, but a date hasn't been announced.

Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and only allow their own branded phones on their networks.

One thing to consider is that you will not be able to get any sort of technical support from your carrier if it doesn't work as advertised. You would have to go to the manufacturer who may or may not provide support for the phone on your carrier.

I think many people do what you want to do however. Hopefully, some will post here.
