unlocked phone for t-mobile?

Unlocked means that it will allow any carrier who uses sim card technology to use that phone. So for instance, if you were with ATT instead of T-Mobile and you wanted that unlocked T-Mobile phone, since it is unlocked, you can use your ATT sim card in it even though its not an ATT phone.
 
i have t-mobile and i am looking for a phone to buy. i like a phone but it says "unlocked" which I don't know what that means. so if i buy it, does it complicate things more? will i still be able to just take the sim card out of my old phone, put it in this one, and that's it?
