Unlocked AT&T Phone with T-Mobile Plan: AOL Instant Messenger?

If I buy an unlocked AT&T phone off eBay, and insert my T-Mobile SIM card, will I be able to use the AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) function? (FYI: I do not have a data plan on my T-Mobile account.)

If it's any help, I am interested in purchasing the SAMSUNG SGH A177.
(Also if you know a cheaper QWERTY phone for AT&T, please let me now.)
