Unlock Motorola Droid?

I'm so confused. I thought you couldn't use a verizon wireless phone with t-mobile service because t mobile has sim chips. Then how did my friend have a unlocked verizon wireless blackberry storm with still using his tmobile?

Can I switch a motorola droid to a t mobile service?
