unlimited internet verses data plans

i must be missing something or am just plain stupid cuz i do not understand what the difference is between having unlimited internet on my samsung impression and the data plans for a smart phone that they are forcing everyone to switch to if you get a smart phone.
if i already have unlimited internet with my existing phone why the data plan if i switch to a smart phone?
 
smart phones use MUCH more data than messaging or "dumb" phones.
AT&T no longer has unlimited data plans for the smart phones. They have a 200mb plan or a 2gb plan.
If you had a smart phone on an unlimited plan prior to the change, you could keep the unlimited plan.
Since your phone was not a smart phone, if you get a smart phone, you will be REQUIRED to get either the 200mb plan for $15/month or the 2gb plan for $25/month.
That is AT&T's Terms of Service.
 
sooooo, i have 5 "dumb " phones on their family plan with unlimited internet for all which costs about $30/mnth. if everyone gets a smartphone it will cost me between $60 and $125/ mnth for the same internet use? or do they have something for family plans too ?
 
No family plan for smartphone data. Each phone must have its own plan. Yes, it will cost between $75 (5 phones @ $15 each) or $125 (5 phones @ $25 each) for data if you have 5 smartphones on your plan.
