Uninstaller for Palm - CleanUninstaller

Anyone used CleanUninstaller here? I have just tried CleanUninstaller and found it is very useful to monitor application activities and will uninstall it completely from my TT, including all database and saved/unsaved preferences. And I like the feature that will remove 'a68k' after used automatically. I am so happy to see my TT clean and tidy! That's why the author called is CLEANuninstaller, hoho! Check it out,

When it first came out I loaded it in my T2. It seemed to work fine until I opened the palm reader. When closing it, got a auto reset(soft). I contacted CleanUnstaller support, and they did an upgrade, but I still have the issue with the palm reader. I really like the program, so I will try to work it out. May be the latest version fixes the bug.

The same thing happened to me but I do not email the author about bugs I just delte the program and never load it again.

You might be surprised at how responsive some developers are if you clearly explain the problem.

Last week I downloaded a WEP cracker for my computer and it would not launch. I emailed the author and within 2 hours, he emailed me an updated application and updated his website. Cool.

You can actually help a developer by reporting bugs.

See my thread on the small "soft reset" app mReset, and the IMMEDIATE FULL CRASH and subsequent Hard Reset I had to do.

I emailed the buy, and 20 minutes later he had gotten back to me, fixed the version, downloaded the fixed one to me from his site (not FreewarePalm). Hours later he had the fixed one up there, too (version 1.01). I'm now happily soft resetting with slider closed using an app that smaller than 1k (760 bytes).

As for CleanUninstall, I don't like it either. I also don't care for Uninstall Manager, though UM is FAR SUPERIOR to CleanUninstall. I prefer to do the old fashioned way - use TomCatalog and Systool to look for traces and Saved/Unsaved pref "orphans" BEFORE deleting the app, then using the Palm Launcher to delete and TealMover to clean up the traces.

Remember to SOFT RESET before deleting any orphan A68 shadow files; otherwise it will say "in use."

Paul, I know you're not a big fan of UM because of the A68 files, but there is an option in the menu of UM to remove A68 files. It does a good job of removing unused a68 files, and will remove additional files each time the option is chosen.

" Delete 'a68k' Files
Use this option to delete old a68k cache files.

The 'a68k' database (file) is a special RAM-based database that the Palm OS creates for each application (68K) on your device. This database is created the first time the application is launched, and stays on the device until the application is deleted. Occasionally, you need to perform a soft-reset to delete a particular a68k database. Under certain circumstances an 'a68k' file can remain on your device. a68k files are small in size.

*

Normally, you don't need to worry about these files, but if you want the extra bytes you can use this option.
* After deleting a68k cache files, the Palm OS will recreate most of them; this is normal.
* NOT ALL a68k files can be deleted.
* Technical note: Uninstall Manager will intentionally decrement the a68k database protect count by one.
* To delete additional a68k files, you can use this option repeatedly. "

I certainly don't want to get in an "application" spat with anyone regarding UM. If it works for people, terrific -- and I respect that.

But when an option says "Delete A68 files?" it gives no indication of WHAT it's getting rid of. You're relying on the app to delete as many as it sees fit, and "only ones that are old?"

If you've ever looked at an app that shows orphan files, not all of them are orphans. It's like Dudley Moore in "Arthur:"

"Not all of us drink because we're poets . . . some of us drink because we're NOT poets."

If Palm creates A68 files as necessary, terrific; however if you filter for A68 in TomCatalog, YOU CAN DECIDE what apps you've deleted that they're related to -- I just like the "control."

Furthermore, with regard to the LexSpell Dictionary, UM didn't fine two files totalling 330k that were related to the app. 330k! Slightly larger than a "0 byte A68 file," huh? I know opinions vary, and I'd rather people use UM and have a better chance to "getting rid of more;" I can see its merit in a lot of circumstances. You're a good man to stick up for it.

I have found that when finding an a68 and trying to delete it with TealMover, it won't delete. You HAVE TO do a soft reset. It escapes me, then, how UM does it with one click -- and again you don't know which ones it's removing. Ones you need would be "resurrected," but I like having the ability to say "Oh yeah, I remember that app I deleted . . . " and striking it. It's just like everything else that makes palm special -- it's a personal thing!

I will agree with you wholeheartedly, ryber, in that if you're going to use an app at all for uninstall, it would be Uninstall Manager. It is the best at what it does - and picky types like me could always "check on it" later and have less to check!!
