understanding substantive due process?

So going into the due process clause, we understand that due process is the protection of ones rights- as well as clearly defining the duties of government to protect those rights in concerns to the legal system. I also understand that (substantive law) is the written law. And (procedural law) is the act of enforcing the written law. However I can not find a clear definition, or correlation between due process, and its sub-factors- procedural, and substantive due process. I am now wondering if there is someone out there that can describe what these terms mean (substantive; procedural due process) and how can I indentify these factors in the future?
