Understanding Scales,and Modes. ?

I have a book on scales,and modes, Now when I'm looking at these and playing them,I am lost in how I can take that and imply it in my songs/solo's and twist them to make them unique. In different words - If I were to make a solo using a scale,how do I mix it up so that I'm not just playing the scale note by note.
