I am doing an Earth Science project and I need to understand how to use a geologic time scale. I think I understand the era, system & period, series & epoch columns, but I don't understand the Years Before Present column. What does ( as an example) 280 + 10 million mean??

the example is supposed to be 280 + 10 Million -years
Grrr. It isn't working right. It is supposed to be 280 (+ OVER -) 10 million years.
