Unbranding Cingular E62

So I just got an E62 and am not too happy about the crippling of java on there (they make it too irritating to use anything not signed by cingular) and I see that there was a method to flash the firmware to either unbranded or Rogers E62 which are both not crippled, but it seems nokia has closed that loophole in the newest version of NSU. So here's my question, what's stopping you from getting a version of NSU that supports the reflashing, disconnecting from the internet so the NSU can't phone home to check for the new version, and then re-flash. Is this possible? Does anyone have a copy of the older NSU? Thanks!

only way around is to find Phoenix and do that whole route (don't ask on here, it's not allowed, fyi)

or if Cingular/Nokia releases a new firmware, then you could change the product code to an unbranded one and then update your firmware. It's the same process as before, only it would work because it's a NEW firmware, not reapplying the old one.

I thought my idea was too simple to work (there's obviously smarter people than me trying to figure this out). So I guess if there is a new version of the firmware I'll do the method, but until then

Do you know what the latest E62 firmware is? Has there been a fw update? I too got mine today and would love to unbrand it. It's performance is a bit sluggish compared to my old E61 but not by much. Really i'm hoping an unbranded version would squeeze out some more RAM. 15 on boot and a bit over a 11 while running bbc with three emails is not good. Do you remember how much usable RAM you gained once you unbranded yours?

yeah...I think i'm going to have to settle with that and treat it like the work phone it's supposed to be. N series for fun nd the E for work as it should be......or i'll grow impatient and reselll it quickly and get another E61 which offered me 0 problems.

It depends on how Nokia blocks the ability currently. For instance, with my 6131 I can reflash it with today's NSU without a problem — who knows what they decide to do with the firmware update? They can even make an update for Cingular product code only, making the trick impossible.

Of course if I changed the code and tried to flash it with the APAC FW my keyboard layout would change so thats a no go as well. My phone crashed twice today while I was altering my profiles. 4th crash in less than 24 hours is certainly not confidence inspiring.

lol....I already had one and I loved it. Really, I dont need the wifi all that much so it's pretty much the same phone....although the UI is a bit more sluggish and it appears to be buggy as hell. I would guarantee that if I could unbrand this it would be perfectly fine. That being said though...if it continues to reset through the weekend then it's back on the bay and i'm getting an E61 again.
